Online Email Server – A Boon For Travellers

When traveling with your laptop, you often find you cannot receive emails easily.  After all, keeping in touch is one of the most important reasons for lugging the computer around in the first place.

Yes, it is always possible to send or receive a message using Hotmail or Gmail, but there are two main reasons for not liking this option:

  • It does not look very professional to the recipient
  • It needs a juggling act to jump between your regular email program and a web-based email program such as Hotmail while you are trying to compose an email, and it is hard to keep track of each topic

A good solution to these problems is to use an online email server which effectively by-passes your normal ISP email server.  Thus, when you travel outside your ISP’s operating area or try to use an alternative ISP (for instance, in your hotel), you will no longer have to find another useable ISP.

Sometimes finding a working ISP within range is impossible but it is always a chore, so having your own permanent smtp server service is one of those fit-and-forget programs that can make a really significant improvement to the traveling experience. Which we roundly applaud!

An open smtp relay and smtp smart host (or smtp smarthost) are similar answers to the same problem.  For those of you who need to know such things, ‘smtp’ stands for ‘Simple Mail Transfer Protocol’, by the way – it is just a standardized method for sending and receiving emails over the internet.

To work properly and unobtrusively, your online email server must have at least the following features:

  • Be easy to install and set up
  • Fast and reliable operationWork anywhere in the world
  • Able to support all your email accounts (Outlook, Outlook Express, Thunderbird, Apple Mail, etc) and use the same addresses
  • Able to handle your daily email requirements
  • Allow attachments to emails
  • Good support and guarantees

There are several services on the market that meet all or most of these criteria. Basically you download and install the software code and pay a monthly fee for as long as you need the service.  Most people keep the service permanently installed on their laptops, use their email program exactly as before, and basically are totally unaware of the system’s existence.

We have found one new software package, SMTP2Go, that meets all these requirements and works extremely well.  In particular, it will support up to 5 email accounts and allow attachments of up to 20 mb per email.  The basic package will allow up to 50 emails per day, and there is an automatic rollover system should you exceed that number occasionally.

The monthly or annual fee for the basic package is ridiculously small (under $2 a month at present), so we have no hesitation in recommending it.  Delta’s Sky Magazine recommended it too!

By the way, it works for PDAs, iPhones and even the old workhorse PC as well.
